5 Things Only True AvGeeks Understand

There is a distinct difference between someone who thinks airplanes are "neat" and a true, irredeemable AvGeek. It’s a lifestyle, an obsession, and frankly, a bit of a socially awkward condition. If you’ve ever stopped mid-sentence in a crowded restaurant because a heavy twin flew over, you know exactly what we’re talking about.

Here are five things only the truly afflicted will understand.

1. The Involuntary Skyward Flinch It doesn’t matter if you are at a wedding, a graduation, or carrying groceries to your car. If you hear the low, throaty rumble of a vintage engine—especially the distinct sound of a two-row radial like a Pratt & Whitney R-2800—your neck is going to snap upwards. You will lose the thread of the conversation entirely while you scan the horizon trying to spot it.

2. Ruining Movies for Everyone Else Hollywood doesn’t care about structural fidelity, but you do. You are fundamentally incapable of sitting silently while a blockbuster movie depicts a Sikorsky SH-3 but dubs in the sound of a completely different helicopter. Or worse, when they show a fighter banking hard in a dogfight with the landing gear inexplicably down. You will point it out. Your family will politely ask you to stop talking.

3. The True Golden Rule of Radio Work Flight instructors drill the holy trinity of cockpit management into your head from day one: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. But once you get out into the real world, navigating busy airspace with stressed-out controllers, the reality shifts into a much more tired, deeply observational rhythm: Aviate. Navigate. Apologize to ATC.

4. The Flight Tracker Addiction Normal people hear a jet overhead and ignore it. You immediately whip out your smartphone, open your flight tracking app, and announce to an entirely empty room, "Oh, it’s just a 777 coming in from Frankfurt." It’s a daily ritual, especially when you catch a rare vintage bird or a military transponder squawking something interesting over your neighborhood.

5. A Very Specific Social Preference Let’s be honest, the aviation community is fantastic, but the general public can be exhausting. Airplanes make sense. They operate on the strict, unforgiving PRINCIPLE of aerodynamics and physics. People do not. At the end of a long day, there is a profound comfort in the smell of avgas, the quiet of a hangar, and the knowledge that machines are simply easier to understand.

Wear Your Affliction If you relate to this list a little too much, you need the gear to match your energy. Ward off unwanted small talk with our I Like Planes and Maybe 3 People apparel, and deck out your flight bag with our Grumman Holographic Die-Cut Stickers.
