Description
The Grumman F7F Tigercat was a powerful twin-engine heavy fighter aircraft that served with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from late World War II through the Korean War. Designed to outperform existing fighters with heavy armament and high speed, it was the first twin-engine fighter deployed by the U.S. Navy and the first Navy carrier-based aircraft with tricycle landing gear.
Though it arrived too late for combat in WWII, the Tigercat saw action in Korea primarily as a night fighter and ground attack aircraft. It boasted four 20mm cannons and four .50 caliber machine guns, along with the capability to carry bombs and torpedoes. While considered by some to be the "best damn fighter" of its time, its high landing speed and issues with single-engine stability limited its carrier suitability, with only the F7F-4N variant being certified for carrier operations.
